As reported in the last Bulletin the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) is part of a coalition led by the AMA to pursue reform of the Prior Authorization system. The initiative is centered on the Prior Authorization and Utilization Management Reform Principles.
Since its launch the trade press has written about the principles. Several health plans have responded and have begun communicating with the AMA about the effort. The AMA also reports that many additional organizations have asked to be included as supporters of the principles. Visit the Prior Authorization page on the AMA website to stay up to date on this reform initiative.
Before launching the initiative the AMA surveyed physicians on their impressions of prior authorization. Review the results here.
Thank you for sharing your experiences dealing with prior authorization in your practice. If you would like to share your stories, please post to our blog at the end of this article.
