The North Carolina Medical Society family is saddened to learn of the passing of a former team member, Lucia Peel. Lucia died Monday, May 8, 2023 at ECU Cancer Center in Greenville, N.C. She was 65.
Lucia served on the Society’s government affairs team from 1994 to 1998 and was integral to advancing NCMS legislative advocacy priorities. She was instrumental in the Medical Society’s engagement in key health policy issues, including Tort Reform, Antitrust Exemptions for Physicians, Patient Safety Regulation, and Managed Care Regulation.
We send heartfelt condolences to the family.
Biggs Funeral Home in Williamston is assisting the family and arrangements are pending.
Lucia Claire Peel was a force of nature, recruited to the NCMS by Dave Horne to join our lobbying team. Lucia was unflappable in circumstances we all found extremely challenging. She helped me learn the indispensable value of personal relationships in accomplishing substantive objectives. By the time I started working with Lucia, she had become a stickler for precision in written communication, which we can all agree is very nearly a lost art. I could go on, but more than anything, Lucia Claire Peel was a smart, pleasant, effective person. Consider for a moment how rare those combined traits have become. We will miss her.
Lucia was instrumental in my learning to advocate for Medicine at the legislature. She was a great coach on messaging and seemed to have a positive relationship with most everyone, which made those interactions more comfortable. She was a friend to so many in the NCMS in her time there and afterwards. Lucia was a great person and devoted professional who made us better with her efforts.
