CHICAGO — The American Medical Association Annual meeting in Chicago featured members of the North Carolina Medical Society and VP Franklin Walker to talk about an innovative collaboration between the AMA and the NCMS Foundation. The goal is to increase awareness of and engagement in diabetes prevention by primary care physicians in the state. Through a multi-pronged approach that leveraged the voices of six local physician champions at the centerpiece, a steady increase in referral rates and enrollments in the CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle change program was realized.
Representing the NCMS was Walker, VP Solutions, plus members Dr. Karen Smith and Dr. Rebecca Hayes. Walker and Smith were panelists, Hayes gave a report on the state of North Carolina at the Southeast Delegation breakfast. NCMS President Dr. Arthur Apolinario was also present at the meeting.
Apolinario says it is “a high honor to be invited to discuss successes in projects like this at the AMA meeting.”
Walker adds: “Being included in this esteemed company at AMA points to the great strides North Carolina is making in diabetes awareness and prevention. It is another way the the North Carolina Medial Society is leading the country in innovative ways to make our citizens healthier.”
The 2023 AMA Annual Meeting runs June 9-14 in Chicago.
