For two weeks, Lloyd Williams, MD, PhD, president of the NC Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons (NCSEPS), joined a surgical team in South Sudan to help restore sight to people living with cataracts.
As featured by NBC News, the team performed more than 1,000 eye surgeries during the mission. Many of the patients had lived with blindness for years before receiving treatment. The story captures the emotional moments when patients have their eye patches removed and see clearly again, often for the first time in a long time.
