Two pharmaceutical giants are collaborating to study and create a feasible melanoma vaccine among patients who had surgery for their cancer. COVID-19 vaccine developer Moderna and pharmaceutical company Merck recently announced a progressive advancement in forming vaccination for melanoma.

According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Anyone can get skin cancer, but some are at greater risk than others. At higher risk are individuals with:

  • A lighter natural skin color.
  • Skin that burns, freckles, reddens easily, or becomes painful in the sun.
  • Blue or green eyes.
  • Blond or red hair.
  • Certain types and a large number of moles.
  • A family history of skin cancer.
  • A personal history of skin cancer.
  • Older age.

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, causing over 9,000 deaths annually.
